Reglan falls under a class of prescription drugs known generically as metoclopramide.  Reglan is used to treat gastrointestinal problems in adults and children, and is typically prescribed for short term use of less than 90 days (12 weeks).

Reglan Usage:
Gastrointestinal Reflux Disease (GERD) is the most common use for Reglan. However, Reglan is also used in both adults and children to suppress symptoms of gastroparesis, heartburn, and reflux.

The recent warnings with Reglan are linked to the problems of use beyond the approved treatment term of 4-12 weeks.  Unfortunately there have been many prescriptions which extend beyond the maximum term, which is against the U.S. Federal Drug Administration recommendations to physicians, and the maker of the drug, Wyeth.

Side Effects of Reglan (Metoclopramide):
Movement disorders and tardive dykinesia have been the most common side effect reported with long term Reglan use.  These movements include, but are not limited to:

  • Facial and jaw movements
  • Twitching of arms and legs
  • Grimacing of the face
  • Tongue and lip movements
  • Tongue protrusions
  • Involuntary arm and leg movements
  • Lip smacking, pursing, and puckering

Tardive dyskinesia is a common diagnosis associated with prolonged Reglan use.  Along with the involuntary movements listed above, an individual experiencing these disorders may also have abdominal pain, anxiety, elevated blood pressure, and depression associated with their symptoms.

What Can be Done:
Many reports show that involuntary movements do subside after metoclopramide has been reduced or stopped altogether.  However, some of the side effects have led to irreversible conditions, and effects on a person’s life.  If you or someone you know has been using Reglan, or other metoclopramide drug, and is suffering from these side effects, contact our law firm using the form at the top-right of the page.
